Depression

Connection between antidepressants and the rise of sleep disorders

Can antidepressants cause a sleep disorder? Various types of antidepressants are used to treat patients who suffer from mild to moderate depression. However, many of those antidepressants have known side effects that can cause or worsen several types of sleep disorders. Insomnia for instance, can many times be traced back to the use of antidepressants by many patients being treated for depression. When antidepressants are taken it stimulates specific chemical reactions in the brain that can directly affect sleep patterns.

While the remedies may do well for depression, they can bring about horrible sleep maladies. It must be said that there can be other factors that cause sleeping problems besides antidepressants such as excess consumption of caffeine, antihistamines or other medications. In any case, for patients that are being treated for depression it has been documented to be a large factor.

Can antidepressants cause sleep apnea?

Depending on which type of antidepressants might be used, some can cause a much more deep sleep than is normal. For some patients, during that deeper sleep the muscles in the throat can relax more than usual and fall back obstructing the airway. This type of sleep disturbance is usually worsened when the patient sleeps on their back, it is at that time the airway can be completely closed off causing breathing to stop anywhere from a few second up to a minute or more. In other words it can cause symptoms of full blown sleep apnea. This pattern can happen hundreds of times a night for some, preventing them from getting a restful sleep, and the patient usually never remembers waking during the night.

Many adult sleep disorders can linger from as far back as childhood. They can often be an underlying reason for behavioral issues in children and later present as depression in adults. In turn, using antidepressants to treat that depression can cause worsened sleep patterns. Any type of problems sleeping need to be properly evaluated and diagnosed to reduce the chance for serious health issues including but not limited to; hypertension, cardiovascular problems and even stroke.
